The StrongLand Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1984 with the merger of four local Chambers ─ Lower Burrell, Vandergrift, Leechburg and Apollo. Local businessmen Larry Iwanski, Jimmy Altmire and Phil Morton spearheaded the move to combine the smaller chambers to form one large Chamber that would have a more effective impact on the community.
The name was derived from the last syllables of the two counties that the new chamber would serve: Armstrong and Westmoreland. Beginning with 138 members, StrongLand has grown to 450 members and is now the largest chamber in the Alle-Kiski region. By expanding and developing programs and services, the chamber has evolved into one of the most effective organizations in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Our community outreach programs, such as Homexpo and the Tour de StrongLand Bike Race, and our educational programs, Quiz Bowl and Math League, in conjunction with our economic development initiatives, Wilder Business Park and Kiski Valley Enterprises, provide the StrongLand Chamber with major role in the economic success of the communities that comprise the region.
The lifeline of our organization, however, is our network of volunteers. It is our volunteers who organize the events, man the registration tables, and work tirelessly in raining the funds that sustains the chamber. They share the same “zeal” that our founding fathers envisioned when they set out to establish a local organization that could represent a larger region.
We’re proud of our history and accomplishments ─ expanding facilities at Northmoreland Park; developing successful business park; increasing educational programs for the area’s eight school districts; and lobbying elected officials for community and economic improvements. They are just a few of the activities that the StrongLand Chamber of Commerce has been able to accomplish since its inception.
You can stake a claim in our region’s future by joining and supporting the programs and services that the StrongLand Chamber offers.
